what to expect during IVF treatment

Starting IVF treatment can feel overwhelming. At Female First Hospital, Surat, we guide you through every step so you always know what comes next. Under the care of Dr. Sweta Patel, here is what to expect during your IVF journey.

Step 1: Consultation & Fertility Assessment

Your journey begins with a consultation and fertility evaluation — hormone tests, ultrasound, semen analysis and a review of your history. This helps decide the right treatment plan for you, whether that’s IUI or IVF–ICSI.

Step 2: Ovarian Stimulation

For about 10–12 days, you take fertility medication (daily injections) to help your ovaries produce multiple eggs. Regular ultrasound scans and blood tests track your progress. A final trigger injection prepares the eggs for retrieval.

Step 3: Egg Retrieval

Eggs are collected in a short procedure under light sedation, about 34–36 hours after the trigger injection. It takes only 15–20 minutes, and mild cramping or spotting afterwards is normal.

Step 4: Fertilization in the Lab

The eggs are combined with sperm in our lab. With ICSI, a single sperm is injected into each egg. The fertilized embryos are cultured and monitored, often to the blastocyst stage (day 5–6).

Step 5: Embryo Transfer

One or two of the best embryos are gently placed into the uterus — a quick, painless procedure needing no anaesthesia. Any remaining good-quality embryos can be frozen for future use.

Step 6: The Two-Week Wait & Pregnancy Test

About two weeks after transfer, a blood test confirms whether the cycle was successful. This wait can be emotional, and our team supports you throughout. If pregnancy is confirmed, we continue with early pregnancy care.
